Daily the average American...

  • consumes over 400 pounds of materials (products can require 30 times their weight in raw materials, shipping and packaging)
  • uses two pounds of paper products (requiring 20 pounds of water and seven pounds of wood)
  • eats 3/4 pound of meat which (if grainfed beef) requires five pounds of grain requiring (if irrigated) 5,000 pounds of water
  • tosses two drink containers and a plastic bag
  • uses 65 gallons of water for household purposes, 1300 gallons for diet and material consumption
  • utilizes the equivalent of 60 pounds of coal to satisfy daily energy needs such as transportation, heating, consumption, etc., and
    puts over 100 pounds of C02 into the atmosphere
  • makes 4.5 trips in the car, driving an average of 72 minutes and 30 miles
  • creates five pounds of garbage and four pounds of hazardous waste
 

Altogether, the average American consumes 60 times as much as a person in the poorest areas of the world and draws on 24 acres of the world's productive areas (4.5 acres would be our fair share)
