The Undoing Global Warming project offers help in combating climate change while cutting energy costs. A weekend workshop helps participants learn better earth stewardship while saving money for use in the ministry and mission of the congregation. NCP staff member Tom Benevento, a specialist in sustainable development with extensive experience in Central America, provides leadership. Start a community garden to encourage locally-produced healthy food—good for earth and good for earthlings! Here’s an example of a group that created a garden. NCP’s Sustainable Living Center has plenty of suggestions on how to get started. Install solar panels on the roof of a congregation or community building to provide the surrounding community with sun-sourced energy. Here’s how one group did it! The If a Tree Falls . .. project supports forest restoration and rainforest preservation in Central and South America (a great Bible School or Sunday School class project). A colorful display and other background materials are available. Learn about the rainforest ecosystem--and what you can do to preserve it--with our Trees of Life poster. Tagua jewelry provides income for native communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon by promoting a sustainably harvested rainforest product—stylish pendants made of tagua, aka, "vegetable ivory." Purchase for yourself or promote in your church, school or club. The Equal Exchange Coffee Project encourages sustainable growing practices for coffee, the world's second most-traded commodity (after petroleum), while paying a fair price to growers. Community Supported Agriculture is a way to get fresh, organic, locally-grown produce and other goods, saving transportation impacts and environment-polluting chemicals. |
