Gifts for Sudan
Bringing a little joy to the world of the struggling people of Sudan

The people of Sudan are suffering. Now in its fourth year, the conflict in Darfur drags on with no end in sight. Already as many as 300,000 have died, and several million have been driven from their homes. Meanwhile, even though the North/South civil war came to an end two years ago, the people of southern Sudan have little to show for it. Education, transportation, medication, vocational training, clean water—and increasingly, hope—all are in short supply.

The New Community Project offers an opportunity to take action on both these fronts, combining peace advocacy with the chance to make a tangible contribution to the well-being of the Sudanese people.

The two gifts of the campaign:

Gift of speaking out: Petitions to President Bush and UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon

Invite members of your community to sign a petition to be sent to President Bush and UN Secretary General Ban-ki Moon calling for increased attention to the crisis in Darfur. (MS Word / PDF)

Gift of aid for southern Sudan: Project Nimule

• Invite members of your community to make contributions to our Project Nimule fund for the community of Nimule in southern Sudan. This effort was launched by college students NCP helped send to the town of Nimule, Sudan for the summer of 2007—they came home with big dreams for continuing to assist the people they had met!
• $60 keeps a child in school for a year (BTW, in the US we spend an average of $780 per person on Christmas gifts!)
• $10 plants 100 trees in a Nile-side nursery (see photos) (the UN says deforestation is one of the causes of fighting in Sudan —more people and less good land to go around)
• $10 buys a mosquito net to ward off malaria (which kills 3000 African children a day)

Your group can focus on one thing—such as school aid—or choose for donations to go to all of these needs.

Putting Gifts for Sudan into action

NCP provides:

• small Project Nimule flyers to pass out
• large Gifts for Sudan poster
• posters to illustrate both the conflict in Darfur and the needs of the community of Nimule
• if desired, gift cards for people who want to donate in honor of someone on their Christmas list

Your role:

• Seek the support of individuals or groups who are natural allies in this effort
• Secure space in a high-traffic area for your display; create promotional posters
• After deciding what you'll be raising funds for, perhaps create graphs to show how many kids you put in school for a year, how many trees you planted, etc., plus how many signatures you've collected
• Let contributors know that 100% of all funds collected are sent to the projects—that's NCP policy!
